Turbulence experiments in a rotating frame

Turbulence subjected to system rotation is present in a wide range of applications, from engineering to geophysics and astrophysics. Although often coupled to other effects, such as stratification or confinement, rotating turbulence in itself is a delicate issue which is not completely understood. The trends toward two-dimensionality, the influence of the background rotation on the energy decay law, or the asymmetry between cyclonic and anticyclonic vortices, are among the most challenging issues for rotating turbulence.

This movie shows an earlier experiment (Morize, 2006) performed in a small scale rotating platform, aiming to investigate the influence of a background rotation on the decay of an homogeneous turbulence. Experiments are carried out in a 60 L water filled rotating tank, in which a grid is rapidly translated. A corotating camera acquires images of seeding particles illuminated by a horizontal laser sheet at mid-height, and velocity fields are deduced using PIV (particle Image Velocimetry).

Those experiments are now continued on the new Gyroflow rotating platform.
