Drop impact on very cold substrates

We study experimentally the impact of water drops on substrate at substrate temperature going down to 100 Celsius.
The solidification of the drop during and after the impact leads to interesting features, from a non-trivial solid donuts to
the formation of cracks and even the fragementation of the resulting ice pancake.
We investigate these different regimes using energy balance arguments based on the Griffith theory of fracture and
phase change due to heat transfers.
